PENTICTON - A total of 27 wildfires are now burning in the Kamloops Fire Centre.
That’s a three-fold increase from nine fires reported yesterday morning in the wake of a large and powerful thunderstorm that passed through the region Tuesday evening, Sept. 3.
Fire information officer Taylor MacDonald says the largest wildfire still burning is the Olalla Creek wildfire, located 10 kilometres north of Keremeos.
It is now estimated at six hectares and is considered “being held,” with 24 personnel along with heavy equipment now working the fire.
A fire between Naramata and Penticton at Kerr Creek is being worked by 21 personnel along with a helicopter and skimmer planes. The Kerr Creek fire is estimated at 2.1 ha and considered out of control.
New fires were also reported yesterday at Okanagan Falls along with a cluster of small spot fires south of Merritt.
The Okanagan Falls fire is considered a spot fire and is under control. It is being worked by two personnel and not expected to spread further.
MacDonald said although daytime conditions are warmer than normal for this time of year, cooler temperatures at night were helping to ease fire behaviour.
None of the fires are currently threatening property values.
