Monte Creek residents want a fire protection service in the area.

On Saturday, May 28, residents within the Thompson Nicola Regional District's Electoral Area P and Electoral Area L were eligible to vote in the Monte Creek Fire Protection Service Establishment and Loan Authorization Referendum.

Since residents have voted in favour of the new service, they will see a new fire department that would offer structural fire protection to homes and businesses in the Monte Creek area.

A total of 196 votes were cast, with 142 residents voting in favour, and 54 opposed. Most residents cast their ballots on general voting day Saturday, May 28, with 155 votes collected. On advance voting day May 18, 20 people voted while 21 mailed in ballots.

"These preliminary results are based on the ballot accounts prepared at each of the above-mentioned voting places and are subject to the determination of the official assent voting results by the Chief Election Officer. Official assent voting results will be announced by the Chief Election Officer no later than 4 p.m. on Wednesday, June 1," according to the regional district.
