21 arrests at march in Minneapolis over police shooting

MINNEAPOLIS - Hundreds of educators and community activists marched in downtown Minneapolis to protest the shooting death of a black man by a police officer earlier this month.

Members of the Minneapolis and St. Paul Federation of Teachers were joined by union members attending the American Federation of Teachers convention at the Minneapolis Convention Center on Tuesday. The Star Tribune (http://strib.mn/2a7lbMw ) reports demonstrators then marched to U.S. Bank headquarters to protest bank policies they say hurt education and minorities.

Police arrested 21 people on public nuisance charges after they sat in a street with their arms linked and refused to move to the sidewalk.

The marchers cited 32-year-old Philando Castile and others killed in encounters with police.

Castile was shot when a suburban St. Paul police officer pulled him over July 6. Castile's girlfriend began livestreaming on Facebook shortly after the shooting.
