Defense rests in federal trial in George Floyd's killing

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — The defense attorney for the third former Minneapolis officer charged with violating George Floyd’s civil rights as Derek Chauvin pressed his knee into Floyd’s neck rested his case Monday. That came after the officer testified that he didn’t realize how dire Floyd’s condition was until paramedics turned him over. Thomas Lane said that moment was the first time he had seen Floyd’s face since police had put the 46-year-old Black man handcuffed, facedown on the ground while struggling to arrest him. Before that, as Lane held Floyd’s legs, he thought he saw Floyd’s chest rise and fall. Lane’s co-defendants, Tou Thao and J. Alexander Kueng, presented their cases last week. Closing arguments are Tuesday.

Police: 1 killed, at least 3 injured in St. Paul shooting

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Police in St. Paul say one person was killed and three others were injured, one critically, in a shooting outside a funeral home on the city’s west side. The incident outside the Simple Traditions by Bradshaw Funeral Home happened about 11:20 a.m. Monday involved a barrage of gunshots and left a 28-year-old man dead. Police say a man in his 20s was shot in the abdomen, back and legs and is currently listed in critical condition. Another man in his 20s and a man in his 30s were injured. The funeral was for a man who was shot and killed in St. Paul on Feb. 1.

Stillwater prison on lockdown after attack on 2 officers

STILLWATER, Minn. (AP) — A state prison outside of St. Paul remained on lockdown after an inmate injured two correctional officers over the weekend. Minnesota Department of Corrections officials say the attack happened at the prison in Stillwater about 4:40 p.m. Saturday during a routine search of an inmate’s cell. Both of the officers were treated at area hospitals and released. The inmate has been transferred to a maximum security facility. Corrections officials say they are trying to determine how the incident connects with another assault in late January that left two officers injured, as well as other unspecified issues at the facility.

Multi-vehicle crash in North Dakota blamed on storm system

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — A storm system coming in behind unseasonably warm weather has led to a chain-reaction crash that shut down part of an interstate in eastern North Dakota amid forecasts for heavy snow in Minnesota and Wisconsin. The crash happened on Interstate 94 west of Fargo Monday morning. That was shortly before the National Weather Service issued a blizzard warning in eastern North Dakota and western Minnesota. North Dakota Highway Patrol Lt. Troy Hischer says a half-dozen people were injured and taken to Fargo hospitals. Hischer tells KFGO radio he believes five semi-trailer trucks and eight other vehicles were involved in the crash. It started with a collision between two vehicles.

MN Patrol: Wisconsin woman killed in wrong-way crash

WINONA, Minn. (AP) — The Minnesota State Patrol says a central Wisconsin woman has died in a crash with a wrong-way drunken driver in Winona. Twenty-year-old Hannah Goman, a Winona State University student from Stevens Point, was killed in the crash early Saturday. The patrol says Goman was a passenger in a car that was struck by a pickup truck going the wrong way on Highway 61. Goman died at a Winona hospital. The 21-year-old driver of the car and another passenger, a 22-year-old woman, both of Oshkosh, Wisconsin, were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. A crash report says the pickup driver is being held in the Winona County jail.

Officials say Superior officer unknowingly ran over person

SUPERIOR, Wis. (AP) — Authorities are investigating an incident in Superior over the weekend where a local police officer unknowingly ran over a person who was lying in the road. The person is listed in critical condition. Officials say they do not whether the person was injured prior to the Saturday night incident. The officer has been placed on administrative duty as dictated by department policy. No further details were immediately available.

New enforcement effort leads to arrest of shooting suspect

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A new targeted speeding enforcement effort on highways around downtown Minneapolis, troopers arrested a driver suspected of being involved in multiple shootings. The Minnesota State Patrol says it was one of several arrests Saturday night in the new 10-day initiative that started Valentine’s Day to crack down on speeding and criminal activity, particularly on Interstate 94 between downtown and I-694. Nearly 150 vehicles were stopped on Saturday for speeding, which led to two DWI arrests, 14 citations for driving without a valid license and seven stopped for hands-free violation.

Police: Golden Valley drive-by shooting injures 1

GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. (AP) — One person was reported to be critically hurt in a drive-by shooting in Golden Valley. Police say it happened about 8:35 p.m. Saturday near Duluth Street and N. Regent Avenue. Police released little information as the investigation is continuing, but said multiple shots were fired in an incident that involved two vehicles. No information was released about the injured person, who was taken to a hospital. On Sunday morning, interim police chief Scott Nadeau provided a brief update via email, saying that the shooting is still under investigation and the victim is expected to survive.
