TORONTO - Canadian mixed martial arts fighter Jordan (Young Gun) Mein has retired at the age of 25.
"I'm ready to transition to a different part of my life," the welterweight from Lethbridge, Alta., told ufc.com. "I’ve been at this for 12 years, 10 years professionally, so I'm just ready to move on in my life."
Mein leaves the sport with a 29-10 record. He was 3-2 in the UFC and 2-1 in Strikeforce.
He started fighting as a pro at 16, losing to future UFC welterweight contender Rory MacDonald in June 2006.
"I love martial arts, it's just the competition side of it, staying at that high intensity and high level, and I'm going to a different aspect of life," Mein said. "I just don't want to compete anymore at the highest level. I still love to compete in the gym, and I'm more into wanting to teach and maybe even going a different route and getting away from martial arts and doing something else. I don't know yet."
Mein has victories over Josh Burkman, Joe Riggs, Dan Miller, Marius Zaromskis and Mike Pyle, among others.
His last outing was a loss to Thiago Alves, a fight in which Mein held the upper hand early on before the Brazilian rallied for the win at UFC 183 in January.
Mein won five of his last seven fights.
