Utility sued for $50M over deadly Michigan house explosion
FLINT, Mich. (AP) — A $50 million lawsuit has been filed against a utility over an explosion that killed two people and damaged several homes in Flint, Michigan. The lawsuit was filed Nov. 30 in Genesee County Circuit Court on behalf of 55-year-old Lisa Rochowiak, who died after the home next to hers exploded. Police haven’t determined the cause of the Nov. 22 explosion, which also killed a 4-year-old girl, injured two other people and damaged or destroyed 27 homes. And a top police investigator said it could take months to sort out. But Fieger Law, which filed the lawsuit, says Rochowiak reported smelling gas on the morning of the explosion and claims Consumers Energy was negligent. The utility issued a statement denying responsibility.

Prosecutor criticizes school over run-up to mass shooting
LANSING, Mich. (AP) — The prosecutor overseeing the case against the student accused in last week’s deadly Michigan school shooting and who took the rare step of charging his parents has left open the possibility that school officials could also face charges. Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald said Monday on ABC's “Good Morning America" that the investigation into Tuesday's attack at Oxford High School will determine whether school officials will face charges. She noted that three hours before 15-year-old Ethan Crumbley opened fire, killing four students and wounding six others and a teacher, he was sent back to class after his parents and school counselors met about a drawing a teacher found on his desk showing a bullet and the words “blood everywhere.”

Could others be charged, liable in Michigan school shooting?
A prosecutor continues to criticize the decision to keep a teenager in a Michigan school before a shooting that killed four students last week. Karen McDonald’s remarks raise questions about whether staff and the school district will face liability — criminal or civil — in the tragedy. Ethan Crumbley is charged with shooting fellow students at Oxford High School after a meeting with counselors and his parents. Investigators say a teacher was troubled by a drawing of a gun, a bullet and a person who appeared to have been shot, along with messages “My life is useless” and “The world is dead.” Nonetheless, he was returned to class.

Luke Gorzinski tops AP's 8-player, All-State football team
Luke Gorzinski went through the long, grueling and sometimes frustrating ACL rehab process even though his knees are fine. The Powers North Central quarterback understands that being the leader of a state championship football program takes more than a strong arm and fleet feet. So when good friend and teammate Dylan Plunger started his ACL rehab program, Gorzinski started it right alongside him. That mentality helped Gorzinski become the Michigan Associated Press Player of the Year for eight-player football.

Third party to probe Oxford High's actions ahead of shooting

(AP) — A Michigan school leader says a third party will investigate events at Oxford High School leading up to a school shooting that left four students dead and six other students and a teacher wounded. Oxford schools Superintendent Tim Throne said in a statement that he called for the outside investigation because parents have asked questions about the school’s version of events leading up to the shooting this week. His comments came after a news conference Friday by Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald that detailed numerous warning signs from the student charged in the shooting. Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel on Sunday offered her staff to conduct the investigation.
FIREFIGHTER COMPENSATION
More Michigan firefighters with cancer eligible for benefits
LANSING, Mich. (AP) — A new Michigan law makes more firefighters with cancer eligible for workers’ compensation benefits. Many in active service already qualify for the wage loss and medical benefits if they get certain types of cancer presumed to have been caused by hazards on the job. Legislation signed by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer last week extends eligibility to forest fire officers and fire/crash officers at military airfields. Jeff Roberts, president of the Michigan Association of Fire Chiefs, said many people may not realize the health effects that can occur years later due to exposure to contaminants and carcinogens while fighting fires and rescuing people.
