BC-US-MICHIGAN-GOVERNOR-KIDNAPPING-PLOT

1st day ends with no verdict in Michigan Gov. Whitmer plot

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) — Jurors have gone home without reaching a verdict after the first day of deliberations in the trial of four men accused of conspiring to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. Federal Judge Robert Jonker suggested they watch the NCAA men's basketball championship and return Tuesday fresh and “ready to engage.” Adam Fox, Barry Croft Jr., Daniel Harris and Brandon Caserta are charged with conspiracy. Croft is from Delaware while the others are from Michigan. Jurors were told they can convict the men if they find there was a “mutual understanding” to abduct the Democratic governor, even if the goal wasn't met. Defense lawyers argue that the group was manipulated by an informant who was taking direction from the FBI.

Detroit is largest city to challenge 2020 census numbers

DETROIT (AP) — Majority-Black Detroit has become the largest city to challenge its figures from the 2020 census following a national head count in which the U.S. Census Bureau acknowledges African Americans were undercounted. Leaders of Michigan’s largest city, which is more than three-quarters Black, had questioned the results of the 2020 census since last December when they released a report suggesting that more than 8% of the occupied homes in 10 Detroit neighborhoods may have been undercounted. The 2020 census data showed Detroit with 639,111 residents, while estimates from 2019 put the city’s population at 670,052 residents.

EXPLAINER: Charges in Michigan Gov. Whitmer kidnap plot case

CHICAGO (AP) — Jurors are deliberating at the trial of four men accused of plotting to abduct Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer in 2020, following some four weeks of testimony. The headline charge in the case is kidnapping conspiracy, which was the focal point of testimony at the trial in federal court in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Prosecutors say the men plotted from June to October 2020 to abduct the Democratic governor at her second home in northern Michigan because they were furious by what they considered her overly restrictive policies during the pandemic. If convicted of the most serious charges, the defendants face maximum life prison terms.

Former McDonald’s worker Jenna Ries sued the franchisee and McDonald’s Corp. in 2019. She alleged that a general manager ignored repeated physical and verbal harassment by a male co-worker against her and 100 other women. The lawsuit was part of a broader push to combat harassment. DNR: Hunting dog bitten by wolf near UP trail

MARQUETTE, Mich. (AP) — A hunting dog has been bitten by a wolf in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. The dog was baying at a rabbit about 200 yards off a trail when the wolf bit it on a hind leg. DNR spokesman John Pepin described the wolf’s behavior as normal. The dog was expected to recover. Pepin says the wolf did not act aggressively toward the hunter. The wolf is part of a known pack that has been in the area more than 15 years.
