A Merritt man won half-a-million bucks playing the lottery.

A $500,000 Daily Grand prize was won by Richard Carmichael, who got a ticket for the Oct. 3 draw at the Pharmasave on Garcia Street in Merritt, according to a press release from the British Columbia Lottery Corporation.

Pharmasave is where he also checked the ticket.

“I didn’t believe it was true when she told me,” Carmichael said in the release.

“It’s unbelievable and exciting. I was quite excited in the beginning and after I calmed down a bit it’s still hard to believe.”

His wife was first to hear the news and she was thrilled for him, the release says.

“It doesn’t seem real… you don’t expect it to be you and all of a sudden it is,” he said.

His plan is to take a road trip down the Oregon coast, go camping, and invest some of the money.

“It’s more or less a safety net.”
