A West Kelowna mother is begging for the public’s help after her son, a man with physical and mental challenges, went missing from his home in West Kelowna three weeks ago and has not yet been found

Pat Wood described her son as a "child in a man’s body" who is very vulnerable and unable to care for himself or protect himself from harm.

James Wood was last seen at around 1:45 p.m., Nov. 8, leaving his home on foot in the 2000 block of Peters Road in West Kelowna. Wood as a 27-year-old Caucasian male, 5’8” tall, 126 lbs. with brown hair and green eyes. He was last seen wearing pyjama pants and a button up T-shirt.

“He is mentally around the age of 12," Pat said. "He is very fearful and wouldn’t fight or anything, just cower down and cry like a child. He hardly ever leaves the house, is afraid of travelling and left with no cell phone or money.”

Pat has been asking the public through social media to check their sheds and under their porches for James. She has been hanging posters around town, praying to God and posting her son’s pictures on social media.

“I ask the community to be watching for him when they are out walking and cycling,” Pat said. “When you are on your walks look under bushes. He could have crawled into a heated storage bin. More than anything, I believe he would crawl somewhere to hide. It is possible he is with homeless people because they would be people he might talk to if they were nice.”

Police and Central Okanagan Search and Rescue along with dog teams and a helicopter have searched near where Wood lived at the foot of the 2000 block of Peters Road as well as wilderness areas he’s known to frequent. Wood said she is grateful to the search and rescue teams for their work in finding her son which will resume once there's a new tip.

“It is harder to cope with every day that goes by,” Pat said. “I am a born again Christian and am hanging onto hope with everything I have in me. Regardless of how he is found, I need closure.”
