Gas leak at medical marijuana site smokes out alleged growing operation

WEST VANCOUVER, B.C. - West Vancouver Police have raided a home where a medical marijuana grow operation was authorized, and have seized far more pot than permitted by Health Canada.

First responders were called to deal with reports of a gas leak.

Const. Jeff Palmer says officers entered the house after the leak had been shut off and spotted more than 800 marijuana plants, with an estimated street value, at maturity, of about $244,000.

A release from West Vancouver Police says the force was aware the medical marijuana grow-op was allowed on the property but notes it was restricted to no more than 161 plants.

Along with the plants, officers seized growing equipment and more than 1.7 kilograms of suspected marijuana bud, packaged in roughly quarter-kilogram bags.

A criminal investigation is underway and police say it's too early to identify a suspect.
