McDonald Park pickleball court closed this week

Mila Bagundol, left, and Robert Kelly play pickleball at the Riverside Park courts on Monday, May 7, 2018.

KAMLOOPS - It’s too small to be a tennis court, but too big to be table tennis.

Though rather than being called 'mini-tennis' or 'table tennis X-treme' it is a game called pickleball.

Robert Kelly and Mila Bagundol were spotted this morning, May 7, at the Riverside Park pickleball courts as the McDonald Park location is closed until Friday, May 11 for maintenance.

Riverside Park brought the total of designated tournament standard pickleball courts in the community to eight when it was opened in 2016.

Both Bagundol and Kelly note what they see as an increase in the sport's popularity.

“It started in seniors because they wanted some kind of exercise,” Kelly says. “And now pickleball has exploded across North America.”

The lighter ball and smaller court make it less demanding on joints especially knees Kelly says.

Bagundol says she is looking forward to Kamloops Open, a tournament at Riverside Park to be held on May 26 and May 27.
