Many Canadians accept transgender children but unsure about hormone therapy: poll

Most Canadians are aware of divisions surrounding the conversation about transgenderism, according to findings in a recent survey.

Canadians are split on the idea of gender definitions, according to an Angus Reid Institute poll.

The survey shows 56% of Canadians define people as either male or female, but 34% say the gender binary is too limiting.

The demographics show people who say people are either male or female tend to be men. The Institute said around 66 per cent of men over 34 who responded to the survey say there are only two genders.

Canadians who feel there are more than two genders tend to be female, about 40% of women, or do not conform to the gender binary themselves.

The survey also asked if Canadians would accept and accommodate a child who wanted to change their gender identity and expression?

The polling firm found 69%, or roughly seven out of ten Canadian parents, would accommodate their child’s desire to change their gender expression, however support for hormone therapy is significantly lower with only one-in-five parents supporting hormone therapy.

Canadians were asked if their answer would change whether the child is eight, 12 or 18, but most Canadians were consistently opposed.

The survey also looked into specific issues in the conversation about transgenderism, it posed Canadians the question: “what is a woman?”

About a third of Canadians say women are those who are born female, while another third says anyone who identifies as a woman is a woman. The study said 18 per cent of Canadians believe anyone with female genitals, either born with them or received through surgery, are women.
