Man who strangled cat under house arrest

KAMLOOPS - A man who got drunk, strangled his cat and disposed of its body in a dumpster last year will spend the next nine months under house arrest.

Steven Seidel, born 1985, was convicted of causing pain, suffering or injury to an animal after he strangled Oreo the cat at his home when he suspected the cat was defecating in his closet. He then disposed of the cat in the dumpster behind the apartment complex he lived in.

During trial proceedings, Seidel said he was concerned for the health of his pregnant girlfriend because of the cat’s habit of urinating and defecating around the house. He told the court he considered alternative options but could not find another home for Oreo.

In addition to his nine month conditional sentence, Seidel will be placed on probation for one year.

He is banned from owning pets for the next five years.
