A man sustained life-threatening injuries while trapped in a large recycling collection truck in Penticton yesterday and police are investigating.
Officers were told that someone was trapped in the back of a recycling truck while it was collecting recycling materials from dumpsters in Penticton's downtown core at 6:05 a.m. yesterday, April 5, according to an RCMP media release.
The driver contacted 911 when he was alerted that someone was yelling in the back of his truck and police arrived a short time later.
It was determined a 52-year-old male was sleeping in an unlocked recycling dumpster and the truck picked up the dumpster, dumped it into the back of the large truck and mechanically compacted the load inadvertently crushing the male in the process, RCMP said.
The male was extracted by emergency crews and transported for medical care and is suffering from life-threatening injuries.
“The Penticton RCMP are continuing to investigate this tragic event and anyone with information is encouraged to call the detachment at 250-492-4300,” Penticton RCMP Staff Sgt. Bob Vatamaniuck said in the release.
