Man shows off handgun in Oliver pub, fires shots in parking lot

A 50-year-old Oliver man was arrested for allegedly firing a handgun in the parking lot of a neighbourhood pub.

Oliver RCMP received a report Feb. 9 of shots being fired outside of a pub on Main Street, at 11:30 p.m. on Feb. 8. RCMP do not identify the pub.

Witnesses said they saw a man inside the pub who had been showing other patrons a handgun.

"Shortly after the man departed, five to six shots were heard in the parking lot and the same man was witnessed to be randomly shooting the gun into the air," Sgt. Jason Bayda of Penticton South Okanagan Similkameen Regional Detachment said in a press release.

"Bullet casings were later located on the ground."

On Feb. 11, Oliver RCMP identified and arrested a 50-year-old man. He faces several potential charges including careless use of a firearm and carrying a concealed weapon. The firearm has been seized.

"The members of the Oliver RCMP detachment worked diligently to quickly identify the man, arrest him and seize the firearm," Bayda said. "Their quick efforts enabled them to remove this firearm from the man and take it off the streets."
