Man pulls knife, threatens Lumby youths

September 06, 2019 - 3:30 PM

LUMBY - A 28-year-old man is in custody after allegedly wielding a knife and uttering threats to youth in Lumby today.

RCMP were called to the Oval Park basketball courts just before 10 a.m. today, Sept. 6, for a report of a man who allegedly produced a knife during a courtside argument.

Police said that approximately 30 youths were at the courts at the time of the incident. No one was physically injured.

"After receiving the call, a North Okanagan RCMP frontline officer was at the park within minutes where he took into custody the 28-year-old suspect male and seized two knives from his possession," RCMP spokesperson Const. Kelly Brett said in the release.

"This is relatively a safe park and area for the youths to play in Lumby, and the RCMP is commending the youths for vacating the area immediately when the alleged knife was produced."

After further investigation, police revealed that the man had two outstanding warrants for previous weapon charges. He remains in custody and is facing possible charges of assault with a weapon, uttering threats and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.
