KAMLOOPS - A local man with multiple aliases has pleaded guilty to manslaughter after an altercation outside of a Kamloops restaurant turned deadly last year.
Eric Bradley Charlie, born 1983, was set to stand trial later this year on a charge of second-degree murder, but in Kamloops Supreme Court today, July 31, he pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of manslaughter in connection to the stabbing death of 30-year-old John Southwell.
The incident happened outside of Hatsuki Sushi on Tranquille Road on Jan. 22, 2016.
Charlie was set to go to trial in November, but instead lawyers will convene in October to fix a date for sentencing, allowing time for appropriate reports to be put together.
Kamloops RCMP previously said an argument had broken out between Charlie and Southwell, resulting in an altercation outside the restaurant, ultimately leading to Southwell's death.
Before the incident, Charlie was sentenced for contempt of court after providing an alias to police. His defence lawyer had argued in court that more jail time wouldn't be beneficial to his client and instead opted for a rehabilitation plan, which a Provincial Court judge agreed with.
There is no minimum sentence for a manslaughter conviction, but its maximum penalty is life in prison.
