Man on toboggan towed by pickup in Lake Country seriously injured

A 19-year-old man being towed by a pickup truck in Lake Country was hit by an SUV last week and wound up in hospital with numerous injuries.

On Jan. 17, police officers, firefighters and paramedic were called to a report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle, according to an RCMP media release.

A Ford F-150 had been towing the young man on a toboggan along Oyama Road near Broadwater Road at approximately 30 km/h.

"An SUV approaching from the opposite direction attempted to avoid the individual on the toboggan as he drifted into their lane however the tobogganer collided with the rear of the SUV," the release reads.

The man was taken to Kelowna General with multiple non-life-threatening injuries.

The person behind the wheel of the pickup was issued a $368 violation ticket and received six demerit points.

“This incident could easily have ended in tragedy and was entirely avoidable," RCMP Cpl. Ryder Birtwistle said in the release. "Please enjoy the snow in the safest possible manner and help us maintain road safety especially during challenging driving conditions."
