Man in hospital after shooting near Coalmont

COALMONT - Alcohol may have been a factor in a shooting that left one man in hospital and another in custody, according to information provided to the RCMP by witnesses.

Sgt. Rob Hughes with Princeton RCMP said that a 58-year-old male is in custody and a 63-year-old male is in the hospital following a shooting near Coalmont Saturday, Aug. 24 around 5:40 p.m.

"Police and ambulance responded taking one male into custody on firearms allegations while the 63-year-old victim was evacuated by helicopter to hospital," Hughes said. "(The) victim has undergone one of multiple surgeries and was last reported this morning as stable."

Both parties are known to each other, Hughes said. The incident occurred on a rural property outside of Coalmont.

"We are investigating charges against both parties. Witnesses state that alcohol may have been a contributing factor."

Hughes said the 53-year-old man will remain in custody Sunday night.

Names have not yet been released.
