Man in custody following threats with weapon in Kamloops

A man who does not appear to be from the area is behind bars in Kamloops after being arrested at gunpoint.

Kamloops RCMP responded to two incidents Saturday, Sept. 7 of an erratic man allegedly firing paintballs at moving vehicles and threatening people with his weapon, police said.

Officers were called when the man was reported near Costco and firing at a moving vehicle. He was then seen travelling to Valleyview but was not found by the RCMP. The police were called again for a similar suspect and similar vehicle threatening a pedestrian near the Sandman Centre and moving towards Riverside Park.

Kamloops RCMP, with the assistance of CP Police officers, were able to catch up with the suspect at the 800-block of Lorne Street, where he was taken into custody at gunpoint by police. The man did not resist arrest and was transported to the Kamloops RCMP Detachment. He is expected to appear before the courts this week.

"This was certainly a serious series of events that our members were able to successfully stopped. This individual was really acting dangerously, and we are thankful he didn't cause any accidents or injuries to anyone prior to his arrest," said Sgt. Mat. Van Laer of the Kamloops RCMP.

The investigation is ongoing, the male does not appear to be from the area, Van Laer said. No further information is being released by police at this time until this case is brought forward to Crown counsel for charge assessment.

Anyone who may have either witnessed and/or had any interaction with the man is encouraged to contact the Kamloops RCMP non-emergency line at 250-828-3000. If you wish to remain anonymous, you can also report to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
