PENTICTON - RCMP have a man in custody after a shoplifter assaulted a Penticton convenience store employee.

Police were called to the 24/7 Convenience Store at 702 Main St. yesterday, Jan. 29, around 8:30 a.m. after a complaint of a man walking out of the store without paying for several items, according to an RCMP media release.

“Once the man was outside the employee ran after him. When outside, the man stopped and an altercation took place in which the man allegedly punched the employee in the face," Penticton RCMP spokesperson Const. James Grandy says in a media release. "The employee was able to gain control of the man, while at the same time calling 911.”

Police arrived and arrested the suspect.

Harley Jack, 33, is facing charges of robbery and assault, and during a court appearance was remanded to custody pending a psychiatric assessment, police say.
