Penticton RCMP and the B.C. Coroners Service are investigating following a drowning on Okanagan Lake yesterday.
Police and emergency crews were called to the 200 block of Lakeshore Drive in Penticton yesterday, April 19, around 1 p.m., where witnesses reported seeing a 53-year-old man swimming by himself near shore, according to an RCMP media release.
Shortly after, the man was observed in apparent distress before disappearing from view.
A witness walked into the water and managed to bring the man to shore where CPR was initiated.
Emergency crews arrived and continued with life saving efforts while transporting the victim to hospital.
"Unfortunately, the swimmer, a local Penticton resident, wasn’t able to be resuscitated and later passed away in hospital. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the man’s family and loved ones during this difficult time," Const. James Grandy, spokesperson for the Penticton RCMP, said in the release.
The B.C. Coroners Service continues to investigate the death.
For privacy reasons, neither organization will be releasing or confirming the victim’s identity.
No other information is being made available at this time, RCMP said.
Anyone witnessing this incident is asked to contact the Penticton RCMP at 250-492-4300, or remain anonymous by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
