Police are investigating after a man was left with serious injuries at a North Okanagan forest service campground on the weekend.

A 21-year-old man's argument with a group of strangers escalated to an assault and he was taken to hospital in the early hours of April 30, according to a Vernon North Okanagan RCMP media release.

It began when two groups of "young persons" met around a fire at a campsite on Hidden Lake forest service road near Ashton Creek, RCMP said.

The groups did not know each other, but the 21-year-old man and three people from the other group began to argue.

The argument escalated to violence and the man sought refuge in his car, leading the three strangers to damage his vehicle.

Police didn't say whether it was before or after he fled to his car, but the 21-year-old was assaulted and left with serious injuries, which weren't life-threatening.

The group of people he was with took him to hospital.

Police did not say how old other members of the victim's group are nor how old they believe his assailants to be. Members of each group are only described as "young persons." Police also didn't say what gender his assailants are or describe the suspects.

The investigation is in the early stages and police request that if anyone has any information regarding the incident to contact Const. Hornoi at the Enderby detachment, according to the news release. The detachment can be reached at 250-838-6818.
