KELOWNA - A man is in custody after allegedly grabbing a child and fleeing police during a strange incident in Kelowna over the weekend.

According to a press release, a 30-year-old man from Alberta allegedly approached a mother and grabbed the child she was holding at Kerry Park, near the intersection of Bernard Avenue and Abbott Street, on April 28.

Police arrived at the scene at 2:27 p.m. and after a struggle the man allegedly jumped into Okanagan Lake and swam away. The man became isolated on a log boom and frontline officers tried negotiating with him. RCMP eventually apprehended him thanks to the Kelowna Fire Department's rescue vessel.

The child received a medical examination and was released from hospital with no apparent injuries.

In the press release, Cpl. Jesse O'Donaghey said the man's intentions in this odd event are unknown, which is a large question in the RCMP's continued investigation.

The man, who is still in police custody, faces possible criminal charges. He is expected to appear in Kelowna court today, April 29.

Any witnesses to this incident are encouraged to contact Kelowna RCMP at 250-762-3300.
