KELOWNA - The old Kelowna Health Centre on Ellis Street is getting a makeover and a new tenant.
Ministry of Citizen's Services, which maintains and manages property owned by the provincial government, confirmed the building at 1340 Ellis St. is being renovated in advance of occupation by new tenants from the Ministry of Children and Family Development.
Communications director Trish Rorison said in an email the renovation will allow the consolidation of services in one location and provide an “innovative office environment” for ministry staff.
Rorison said space is being developed for art rooms for play therapy, dedicated family rooms as well as a “culturally appropriate space" for circle ceremonies plus an art and artifact gallery.
“The facility requires upgrades to improve the access to maximize natural light and to properly accommodate these important community services,” Rorison said.
The building on Ellis has sat empty since the Interior Health Authority completed its own consolidation in 2016 taking up tenancy in the new Kelowna Community Health Centre a block up Ellis Street at Doyle Avenue.
Rorison could not confirm the size of the building nor how old it is. Cost of the renovation was not provided.
