Major film convention coming to Kelowna for the first time this summer

KELOWNA - A decades-old film industry convention will be making its first appearance in Kelowna this summer, filling the Okanagan with the movers and shakers behind Canadian moviemaking.

ShowCanada is a convention that brings together delegates from the Canadian and American film industries for three days of movie screenings, panel discussions, information seminars and networking opportunities. For the first time in its over 35 year history, it will be held in Kelowna.

Carrie Wolfe, conference producer, confirmed ShowCanada will be held in Kelowna from June 4 to 6. They're expecting 375 to 400 delegates from movie studios, theatre chains, popcorn suppliers and other aspects of the industry to attend the event.

"We're very excited to come to Kelowna," Wolfe said.

Wolfe said the event typically bounces from coast to coast each year. In 2018 the conference was held in Charlottetown, P.E.I. She said they usually pick cities they haven't visited yet to host the conference. This year, Kelowna was a no-brainer.

"Kelowna is beautiful," Wolfe said.

The convention is for industry members only, so the public will not be allowed to attend. The theme is innovation, which Wolfe said was partly inspired by Kelowna's trail-blazing path in the film industry.

More details about the event will be released in the coming months. You can visit the ShowCanada website to keep up to date.
