MEXICO CITY - Police in the northern Mexico border state of Tamaulipas say officers have detained two Texas men and freed another American they'd kidnapped in the United States.
The Tamaulipas state government said Wednesday that the men from Hidalgo and Brownsville were stopped at a checkpoint on Tuesday. When police looked over their vehicle, they found a third American, a 28-year-old man who had been kidnapped on May 12.
Police say the two men grabbed the victim in McAllen and drove him across an international bridge into the border city of Reynosa.
They say the victim was hidden in a safe house in the nearby city of Matamoros while the kidnappers were making ransom calls to his family.
The area is dominated by the Gulf drug cartel.
