Love or hate the roar of power boats? Now you can tell Transport Canada what you think

Transport Canada wants to know if people want it to crack down on loud boats.

People can respond online to let the government agency know which of five options they prefer, from doing nothing, to cracking down on both operators and manufacturers.

“The Small Vessel Regulations currently require that all power-driven vessels be equipped with a muffler,” states the Let's Talk Transportation website. “While a muffler is required, the regulations don’t include any performance standards for mufflers or engine noise emission limits.”

Police have a hard time enforcing the rules since they don’t always have the expertise to determine whether a muffler is properly equipped or not.

Option one is to make no changes to the current Small Vessel Regulations.

The restrictions increase by stages to clarifying the existing regulations, bringing in performance standards for manufacturers of new boats or regulations just for operators.

Option five would require both operators and manufacturers to not exceed noise levels.

That may require owners to spend money modifying their motors and police will have to buy equipment to measure noise levels and train officers to use it.

There are two ways to respond on the website here.

One is to hit the Have Your Say tab and sign in to the various options. To date, the vast majority of sign-ins are for option one (do nothing) and option three (maximum regulations).

The other way to provide feedback is to submit a Word or PDF file through the Submissions tab on the site.

Deadline to provide input to Transport Canada is May 13.
