Looking for a forever home; Kamloops SPCA pet of the week

KAMLOOPS - Kubby came to the Kamloops SPCA along with his siblings because they were an unwanted litter. Kubby has been diagnosed with megaesophagus (M.E). M.E. is a condition in which peristalsis fails to occur properly and the esophagus is enlarged. Normally, when the animal's esophagus is functioning properly, it pushes the food down it and into the stomach using a series of muscles. However, when an animal has M.E, the esophagus is enlarged and does not have the muscle tone to push the food downward to the stomach.

In order to combat this, Kubby needs to be fed in a vertical, standing (upright) position to help gravity move his food down his esophagus. If not functioning properly, or if he gets excited or upset, Kubby's most common symptom is vomiting.

Most dogs with M.E need a liquid (or soft) diet, however Kubby is successfully eating baby rice cereal, canned puppy food, mashed puppy kibble and chicken broth all mixed together and rolled into balls and fed slowly one at a time. Kubby will require regular vet visits to ensure he is getting proper nutrition, gaining weight and thriving as a normal puppy and dog should.

Kubby tends to use his nose well, and would be best suited to a home where he will be the only pet because he will try and consume other types of food which will only cause problems for him. Table scraps and treats as such should never be given to him without him being fed properly upright. Water bowls should also be risen up, so a special home that is able to deal with such modifications to their life, and home, is important.

Despite all of this, Kubby is full of energy and is eager to explore. He loves to cuddle and is already walking on leash like a pro. House training is coming along well, and although a home with other animals is not recommended.

Kubby is smart, and eager to please, and is developing some good puppy-manners and obedience thanks to the care and dedication of his foster family.

Kubby's Animal ID is 418471.

Visit the Kamloops Branch webpage for more information such as location, adoption fees, and hours of operation.
