Composters and in some places rain barrels are selling for wholesale prices around the Thompson-Okanagan, if you know where to look.

Backyard composters are available in the Central Okanagan for $35, rain barrels for $78 and Green Cone digesters for $100, roughly half the price of in-store counterparts. At Canadian Tire, the same composter sells for $80. Home Depot’s 55-gallon rain barrels sell for $120.

But there are only 300 composters, 200 rain barrels and 75 green cones available for pre-order from March 2-31, or until sold out, according to the Regional District of Central Okanagan's website.

“Digesters, such as the Green Cone, are the easiest way to handle any type of kitchen scraps, including hard to manage food waste such as meat, bones, dairy, breads, processed foods, cooked food and pasta. Digesters can also be used to decompose pet waste. They work well in small backyards when the goal is waste reduction as opposed to soil building,” according to the regional district’s website.

“The waste put into the Green Cone is digested rather than composted and is primarily reduced to water. This nutrient rich water enters the soil under the base of the digester unit.”

Buy composters, rain barrels and cones online or by visiting the regional district office at 1450 KLO Rd. in Kelowna from Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Regional District of the North Okanagan has a 50 per cent rebate program for composters purchased in the North Okanagan but doesn’t sell composters directly.

The Thompson Nicola Regional District sells backyard composters for $25, worm composters for $50 and Green Cone digesters for $100 at a subsidized rate year-round, said Andrew Roebbelen, waste reduction coordinator with the district.

Backyard compost bins will be on sale for $49.50 next week in the Regional District of the Okanagan-Similkameen from March 1-25.

According to waste management coordinator Cam Baughen, the district works with local retailers as it allows the district to sell composters at wholesale value and it increases foot traffic for businesses.
