Light a Bulb Campaign Raising Funds for Cancer Screening

Vernon Jubilee Hospital Foundation’s Light a Bulb Campaign is off to a great start, raising $67,990 towards a goal of $250,000.

“We are very thankful to have the generous support of community-minded organizations, businesses and individuals who want the best possible health care for everyone in the North Okanagan,” said 2017 Light a Bulb Campaign Chair Dr. Curtis Mohamed.

Light a Bulb is raising funds for cancer screening with a goal to replace the fleet of endoscopes in the VJH Ambulatory Care Unit.  Surgeons use these specialized, flexible tubes with tiny, high definition cameras on the end.

The images from the camera are projected on a screen where the surgeon can see if there are any abnormalities.  Many times, they can address problems right at that moment of discovery and take action to avoid any future issues for the patient – essentially curing cancer before it starts.

“Early detection means more treatment options and better outcomes,” said Dr. Mohamed. “Screening helps find polyps that can be removed before they become cancerous.”

Last year, approximately 4,600 colonoscopy procedures were performed at Vernon Jubilee Hospital.

Some of the generous donors contributing to Light a Bulb include the Vernon Elk’s Lodge #45, Book Warehouse, and Army Navy Air Force Unit #5.
