VICTORIA - Step aside, Olivia; there's a new baby champ in town.

British Columbia parents really like the name Liam; it was the most popular name for babies born in 2018 in the province, according to the Ministry of Health.

Liam has dethroned Olivia, which was the baby name champion in 2017. Liam knocked Olivia to second place, followed by Emma, Lucas and Oliver.

Liam also stands as the most popular boy name for 2018, unseating last year's champ Benjamin. Other top boy names include Lucas, Oliver, Ethan, Noah, Logan, William, James, and Leo (who is the only new addition to this year's list).

Olivia remains the most popular name for girls, with mainstays such as Emma, Amelia, Charlotte, Chloe, Ava, Sophia, Isla, Emily and Hannah rounding out the list. Isla is the newest name in this year's ranking.

In 2018, there were 40,565 babies were born in B.C. Of those, 19,821 were girls and 20,744 were boys, down slightly from 21,727 girls and 22,967 boys born in 2017.
