The Kelowna Legacy Group is not giving up easily on its efforts to keep the former RCMP building on Doyle Avenue from being redeveloped.

The group issued a news release today, July 30, saying council can still undo its decision to lease the land to the RISE Commercial Developments to build a residential tower with a community arts space.

“We request our City Council to revisit the lease and the previously issued RFP (request for proposals) on the RCMP site at 350 Doyle Avenue and engage our community in creating a greater vision for this iconic piece of land within our downtown core,” the release states. “If you are of like mind, please allow your voice to be heard. It certainly has been proven globally that together we can make a difference before it is too late.”

The group formed in October 2019 when it heard that the request for proposals was put out by the city and produced a video showing how the area bordering on City Hall could be developed.

It issued a news release on July 2 expressing its disappointment with the city’s decision. Today’s release adds in the call for council to revisit its decision.

It’s not the only group calling for a new plan for the area.

The Citizen’s Committee for a New Performing Arts Centre has recently formed. It’s calling on the city to find a way to build a new performing arts centre without tearing down the existing Kelowna Community Theatre first.

While this group has not called for a halt to the redevelopment of the RCMP site, it is adamant that a new theatre be built in the downtown cultural district and that is one of the few undeveloped city-owned properties in the area.
