Latest phone scam in Kamloops threatens you with arrest

FILE PHOTO

KAMLOOPS - Police are warning the public after receiving numerous reports of a phone scam involving local police.

In a news release issued by Kamloops RCMP, police say a scammer is telling people over the phone that there is a warrant out for their arrest and they are then instructed to meet with officers at a local shopping centre to pay for alleged fines or deposit BitCoin into an account.

Police say even the caller ID has listed the phone number and name of the Kamloops RCMP detachment.

“If you receive a phone call like this, hang up. You will never receive a phone call that tells you there’s a warrant issued for your arrest,” Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says in the release. “Those matters are handled via paper documentation, typically served in person by a uniformed officer.”

If you receive this type of call, contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, police say.
