Landfill users reminded to secure cargo

KELOWNA - As the fall clean-up continues, more residents are dropping off recycling, waste and yard waste at the Glenmore Landfill. However, some vehicles are arriving without covered loads, which can allow debris to fall out and create a safety hazard to vehicles driving behind as well as pedestrians and cyclists who share the road. The City of Kelowna is reminding residents that loads to the landfill need to be tied, strapped and tarped.

“It’s important that residents remember to cover and secure their loads regardless of how far they’re travelling,” said Scott Hoekstra, Landfill Supervisor. “Bylaw enforcement staff have been monitoring and handing out fines to those that neglect to cover and secure their load. There are also cameras located at the landfill that can be used to impose fines.”

The fine for an uncovered or unsecured load is $150 under the City’s Solid Waste Management Bylaw. Provincial penalties may also apply.

The Glenmore Landfill is located at 1595 Glenmore Road North. The facility is open seven days a week from 7:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m., except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.  Residents planning to put their gardens to bed for the fall can also purchase OgoGrow or GlenGrow compost at the landfill from 7:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. daily.
