PENTICTON - A recent attempt to seek public funding to allow operation of the Keremeos library for five days a week  came back before the regional board yesterday.

The alternate approval process for a bylaw to provide financial support to Keremeos library to operate on a five day schedule failed, resulting in the matter coming before the board for a decision to abandon the bylaw or move it forward to referendum.

At the Regional District of Okanagan Similkameen board meeting Thursday, Feb. 16, Keremeos director Manfred Bauer moved the matter go to referendum in Keremeos and Areas B and G.

Bauer said there was evidence in the past two weeks favouring the motion, as residents in the Similkameen expressed a desire to have a say in the matter.

A homeowner with an average priced house of $185,000 is anticipated to pay an additional $10 annually for the service.

The motion to hold a referendum passed with area G director Elef Christensen the only director opposed.

A referendum is expected to cost $3,500 per polling station, three of which will be needed for the vote.

March 25 is the anticipated voting day, with two advance polling dates to be announced.
