A $23.3 million addition to the Dr. Knox Middle School in Kelowna will create 12 new classrooms with room for 300 students.

There are 11 portable classrooms at the school in the Glenmore area of the city.

“The focus of the design is to accommodate the middle school expansion with some consideration to allow for a future three-storey block of learning spaces and a new gymnasium to accommodate a potential conversion of the existing school to a 1,500 capacity secondary school,” says a memo attached to the development permit application posted on the City of Kelowna website today, Nov. 4.

The provincial government announced in September that it will pay $22.8 million for the 12-room, 2,400 square metre, two storey expansion. School District 23 will also contribute $500,000.

Construction is slated to start in the spring with completion expected in the fall of 2024.

The school opened in February 2009 at a cost of $26.9 million with room for 800 students.

It was touted for its energy efficiency that includes geothermal heating and cooling with sensors in each room to adjust light and heat when people are inside.

Construction of the addition is designed to ensure that the existing geothermal field is not disturbed
