Kelowna youth mental health centre closed because of fire

FILE PHOTO

KELOWNA - A fire in the kitchen of the Foundry youth mental health centre yesterday, July 9, has forced the closure of the facilty for four weeks.

The fire happened about 8 p.m. in the kitchen of the building at 1815 Kirschner Road. No one was hurt and the fire was contained to the kitchen.

The fire started when a toaster ignited as it sat on a stove burner that had been accidently left on, states a news release from the Canadian Mental Health Association that operates the facility.

The fire was discovered by cleaning staff. While it was limited to the kitchen, there was smoke damage in the rest of the centre.

Staff have been relocated to the association’s Sutherland Avenue facility and clients will be contacted about appointments.
