Kelowna woman hit crossing Highway 33

A 59-year-old Kelowna woman was hit by a vehicle while crossing a busy stretch of Highway 33 near Barber Road last night.

RCMP say she was hit by a jeep at around 5 p.m. yesterday, Jan. 8. She was not in a crosswalk.

“As she was crossing the westbound lane, the driver of a Jeep Patriot was traveling westbound and, despite his efforts of applying his brakes, he was unable to stop in time and the female was hit,” RCMP say in a press release.

The driver, a 52 year-old Kelowna man, remained on the scene and cooperated with police.

Pedestrians should only cross busy roads at crosswalks and dress to be seen, police say.

“Make sure you can hear and see oncoming cars,” the news release stated. “Remove your headphones and your hood when crossing the street. Make eye contact with drivers. Keep your head up and look where you’re walking. Never assume that drivers see you.”
