The girls’ Huskies volleyball team at Okanagan Mission Secondary made school history winning gold in at the High School Girls B.C. Championship.
The provincial championships were held at the school’s gym on Dec. 6 and the final match was between the Huskies and another Okanagan school team from Mount Boucherie Secondary School, according to a school district media release.
“What an experience of a lifetime for OKM athletes to win our first provincial volleyball title in our own gym, in front of our family, friends, and community,” said head coach for OKM Rob Steciuk, who also was the tournament director, in the release. “The gym was absolutely packed, and it was insanity when Shea (Berisoff) got the winning kill from a great backset from Grace (Blaskovits).”
It is the first time in the school’s history to win a provincial banner in volleyball, and only the second time their volleyball program competed in a final. The last time was in 1999 when the school was a small AA school and earned a silver medal in girls volleyball.
“It was special to have an all-Okanagan final,” Steciuk said. “MBSS are well coached, their athletes are talented, and they are just nice kids. Many of the OKM and MBSS athletes are friends. It was a privilege to be able to host and showcase all the great volleyball happening in the valley.”

In the end, the Huskies took home gold, Mount Boucherie took home silver and Ecole Kelowna Secondary finished 6th, according to the release.
Many local athletes took home provincial all-star awards and the tournament MVP was the Huskie’s Kylie Taylor.
