The Kelowna RCMP has confirmed a missing snowmobiler has been found safe and sound after spending the night outdoors.

The 14-year-old snowmobiler was originally reported missing at 6 p.m. Feb. 17, after the teen’s father and another son, were overdue from a snowmobiling trip in the Greystokes area southeast of Kelowna, according to an RCMP media release.

A short time later, the father relayed that he and one son managed to return to their vehicle but the other son had somehow become separated and hadn't returned overnight, RCMP said.

Central Okanagan Search and Rescue said in a media release because of the boy's young age, a Cormorant helicopter and Buffalo aircraft from the Transport and Rescue Squadron at CFB Comox were dispatch at first light. The Buffalo arrived at the search area just as the boy was found by a Vernon search and rescue snowmobile team from the Lumby side of Greystokes spotted him around 10 a.m.

The boy was evacuated by helicopter to a waiting ambulance and has since been released.

“Although he could’ve been better equipped, he had enough cold weather gear to last the night," search manager Duane Tresnich said in the release. Tresnich said in total, 30 searchers took part in the rescue.
