Kelowna resident suffers burns, smoke inhalation putting out fire

A Kelowna resident suffered second-degree burns to his hands while trying to extinguish a fire that took place in a parking garage at a multiple family residence this morning.

Along with the second-degree burns, the resident was also treated for minor smoke inhalation when emergency crews arrived at building's parking garage in the 300 block of Fizet Avenue in the city's Rutland neighbourhood today Oct. 28.

According to a Kelowna Fire Department media release, a 911 call was received just before 10 a.m. reporting black smoke coming from the garage.

Fire crews arrived at the scene to find the fire smouldering having been largely put out by a resident of the building. Fire officials do not say what was burning.

The resident was treated for minor smoke inhalation at the scene.

The remaining occupants of the building were all able to evacuate safely without injury having heard the smoke alarms go off.

Kelowna Fire Department says the fire was contained within the garage and the flames did not spread to the rest of the building. The fire was deemed accidental.

The fire department responded with three engines, a rescue unit, a command unit, and a Safety officer, including 17 fire personnel. B.C. Ambulance Service and RCMP were also on the scene as well.
