Kelowna renters getting hit by fake rental scam

File photo.

Kelowna renters are falling prey to a real estate rental fraud.

According to RCMP the scam starts with a Kijiji ad for a Kelowna rental property. Potential renters have met with the landlord going by the name of Tim Halyhart at the listed rental property and engaged in a long-term rental contract, then paying him a damage deposit to secure the rental property as their own. RCMP don't offer up what happens next, but they do want to learn more about Halyhart.

“This investigation is on-going and our priority is to identify the suspect male in an effort to advance the investigation,” Cpl. Meghan Foster of the Kelowna RCMP said in a press release. “The suspect male has allegedly provided the name of Tim Halyhart to the renters but we do not believe this to be the suspect male’s true identity.”

A description of the suspect is as follows:

  • black male approximately 23 to 30 years of age
  • approximately 5-foot-11 with a bigger build

Anyone with information about this scam is asked to call the Kelowna RCMP at 250-762-3300.  Should you wish to remain anonymous, please contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
