Kelowna RCMP want help catching Knox Mountain fire culprits

Kelowna RCMP is asking the public for video footage in an effort to find out who started a wildfire on Knox Mountain on Canada Day.

Residents living in the Knox Mountain and Poplar Point areas were put under evacuation order after the fire broke out at around midday July 1.

Police believe the fire was human-caused and are asking members of the public if they witnessed any suspicious activity at the top or around the base of Knox Mountain between 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. on Canada Day.

In an unusual move, Kelowna RCMP have produced a map showing a direct sightline to the location of the fire.

The area shaded green shows those in the sightline.

"Members of the public in this area could potentially have video footage of any suspicious activity. Police believe the locations with the best angles are bounded by the following streets: Eastern boundary - Richter Street, Southern boundary - Clement Avenue, Western boundary - Okanagan Lake/Manhattan Point, and Northern boundary - Central Avenue," the release states.

Police ask members of the public in the green zone that have high-resolution video footage of Knox Mountain to contact them.

The area shaded red is not in the sightline, and not visible to the area in question.

Anyone with any information should call Kelowna RCMP at 250-762-3300 and reference the file number 2023-37249.
