Kelowna Mounties had to use a conducted-energy weapon to arrest a man with a BB gun this morning.

A man was spotted by witnesses near Rutland Centennial Park carrying a gun. They saw him drop it once and pick it up again. They called Kelowna RCMP who quickly found him.

"Officers drew their pistols and ordered the male to comply," Const. Mike Della-Paolera said in a news release. "The male refused to comply to the officer’s commands. The suspect continued to reach for his waistband and verbally challenge police commands. Officers were able to deescalate the situation but were required to utilize the Conducted Energy Weapon to effect an arrest."

After he was arrested, police discovered the gun was actually a BB gun. Still, police are pursuing firearms charges.

“The Kelowna RCMP were able to respond to this potentially dangerous situation thanks to the quick actions of a citizen,” Della-Paolera said. “We are thankful no police officers or citizens was injured during this incident.”
