KELOWNA — Police were present at a Kelowna beach after a body was discovered in Okanagan Lake this afternoon.
RCMP received the call at about 2:23 p.m. today, April 21, of a body floating in the water, an RCMP media release says.
Reports say the body was discovered face down just off the shore of Gyro Beach along Lakeshore Road.
Paramedics and fire crews were also on scene. B.C. Coroner's Service is conducting an investigation.
“The investigation remains in its early stages at this time, as police work alongside the coroner to identify the deceased,” Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey says in the release. “Once the individual is identified, our next priority will be to properly notify their next of kin.”
Gyro Beach remains closed at this time to allow emergency crews to access the site. It is expected to remain closed for a number of hours to allow police and coroners to conduct their investigation.
“We would greatly appreciate it if the general public would avoid the immediate area at this time,” Cpl. O’Donaghey says in the release.
