Kelowna one step closer to a water system that actually makes sense

KELOWNA – Kelowna’s four separate water providers have taken a step forward towards a more streamlined and effective system.

The formation of a “long-term water supply plan” will bring together the City of Kelowna, the Black Mountain Irrigation District and the South East Kelowna Irrigation District, according to a media release from the Ministry of Community.

"All parties have agreed on a statement of principles and terms of reference for a value planning process that will allow for an independent third-party to review all relevant documents and information that would inform the development of a new, integrated water system for the region over time.”

The release does not say what steps have been taken but claims to be closer to solving an issue that has plagued Kelowna for years.

"This collaborative approach brings the municipality and the four districts closer to bringing to life an optimal, holistic water solution for the Kelowna area solution that provides the best, lowest cost approach, achieves public health standards, includes administrative and operational flexibility and maintains the region's important agricultural interests.”

Mayor Colin Basran called for an eventual amalgamation of the four providers earlier this year.
