Kelowna man launches petition against Iranian government

A rally drawing attention to human rights violations in Iran was held in Kelowna's Kerry Park, Oct. 1, 2022.

A Kelowna man, who helped organize a rally for Iranian human rights, is now petitioning the House of Commons.

The petition initiated by Keyvan Khadem calls for the House of Commons to list Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organization, deport any individual connected with the Iranian Government or the IRGC and seize Canadian assets of these individuals for sale and re-distribution to the Canadian families of victims of the IRGC.

Protests against Iran’s human rights violations have been occurring globally after a 22-year-old Mahsa Amini was detained by Iran’s morality police and killed for not covering her hair. This month, a mother of a 16-year-old Iranian youth said she was also beaten to death as part of the crackdown on anti-hijab protests roiling the country.

Khadem said he’s doing this from an individual perspective and is not being supported by any group to put the petition forward. The petition is being presented by MP Dan Albus.

He believes the petition will gain a response from the house as it’s a hot topic in parliament right now.

“It’s gaining momentum and it’s an individual intuitive. A lot of university students are supporting it, many people that are my friends are supporting it,” Khadem said.

Khadem was one of the organizers of a Kelowna rally to raise awareness for human rights violations in Iran as part of global protests. It saw roughly 200 people attend.

“It makes me feel… there are people on this side of the world that are here to support them,” he said.

In the last 24 hours, the petition has gathered 182 signatures and will be open for signatures until Dec. 5.
