A YMCA of Okanagan employee is in critical condition in a Calgary hospital following a two-vehicle crash last weekend on the Trans-Canada Highway.

Collin Morrison, from Kelowna, was driving to the Okanagan from Calgary, Feb. 5, with his older brother Scott when a cube truck lost control and hit their vehicle near Field, according to an online fundraiser started by the YMCA.

Scott died at the scene and Morrison was taken to Calgary where he remains in critical condition in an intensive care unit, according to the online fundraiser.

“Almost everyone who works, volunteers or visits the Kelowna Family Y knows Collin and his mother, Madeline, who have both worked and volunteered at the YMCA for more than 19 years. Collin has a huge heart, devoting a lot of time reaching out and helping others in any way he can - by sending jokes when someone needs a pick-me-up or by checking on friends to see if they need anything,” the non-profit wrote on the page.

Morrison has a broken neck, multiple breaks in his legs, blood vessel damage and internal bleeding. He already has undergone two surgeries since the accident and will require more once he is stable, according to the YMCA.

“Though not able to talk right now, he has already won the hearts of the nurses caring for him with his thumbs up and other gestures of appreciation,” the non-profit wrote.

The funds raised will be used to support Morrison’s recovery and to get his back home where his family and friends can help him. The money will also help his mother Madeline travel to Alberta to be with him and have a comfortable place to stay.

Since it’s creation yesterday, Feb. 10, the online fundraiser has already raised more than $8,000 of its $10,000 goal. You can find it here.
