VERNON - A 28-year-old Kelowna man was arrested yesterday after allegedly robbing two Vernon businesses yesterday afternoon and fleeing from police in a truck at high speed.

Vernon-North Okanagan RCMP say in a press release that police responded at a robbery at a business the 3100 block of Hwy 6 in Vernon at around 1:45 p.m.

The male suspect allegedly threatened staff and fled in a black Dodge truck with a stolen Alberta licence plate.

Shortly afterwards at 3:45 p.m. a second robbery occurred at an Esso gas station at the corner of 27 Street and 48 Avenue. Police say the suspect fled with an undisclosed amount of cash, cigarettes and lottery tickets, in a similar Dodge truck with the same stolen Alberta licence plate.

The suspect vehicle was spotted by police at around 4:30 p.m. in Lake Country but when the officer tried to stop the truck the driver allegedly fled at high speed, heading in the direction of Kelowna.

Police located the abandoned truck in downtown Kelowna, and with the assistance of the RCMP Dog Service, the suspect was taken into custody.

RCMP say a 28-year-old Kelowna man will appear in court in Vernon facing various criminal charges.
